Horses in Cinema

Animals have a long tradition of appearing on the silver screen. Despite the age-old adage ‘Never work with Children or Animals’ we constantly look to write roles for our furry friends. And Horses are one of the noblest and also cooperative animals you can work with.

Evolution isn’t just about physical traits. It is also about how a creature adapts to its social environment for its protection. And Horses evolved socially to become indispensable to humanity. Up until recent centuries with the invention of the car, Horses were the backbone of our society. People of all ages love and adore them. Perhaps one of the most well-known horses in cinema history. Everyone knows the name Seabiscuit, despite many people never having watched the movie.

Spawning from the book of the same name, Seabiscuit quickly became one of the most famous horses in history. Secretariat

Another famous racehorse, Secretariat followed the format of Seabiscuit, being a dramatized biography of the horse’s life. And, like Seabiscuit, it went on to get critical acclaim and become another household name for any horse fans.

The movie was put back into the public spotlight after the popular Netflix show ‘Bojack Horseman’ used Secretariat as a major plot point within the narrative, again bring this fantastic Horse back into the public mind and eye.

The movie did receive some flak for taking liberties with the actual history of Secretariat, with many preferring the arcuate honesty of Seabiscuit. But overall people were very happy with the film.

 

Shadowfax

 

Lord of the Rings is one of the most popular and famous fantasy franchise on the planet. Young and old alike will happily sit down and engage in the massive three-part epic that is LOTR. And some even braver souls will try and power through the extended edition marathons.

And Shadowfax is one of the most memorable members of the cast. With his beautiful white mane, he adds a lot of gravitas and energy to all the scenes he is in. And belonging to Gandalf makes him instantly one of the best characters going.

Despite him being fictional, the actor horse used was features in a slew of other movies and tv shows after. Often getting more work than some human actors, which is no small feat for an animal actor.

 

War Horse

A lot of students will remember reading War Horse for their exams. And many people simply loved the film. The horse, named Joey, soon became an icon for horse movie stars. The movie managed to tug at people’s heartstrings in a deeply profound way and inspired a lot of people to rethink their stance on how we treat animals.

The play of the same name also made waves with its stunning physical effects and is famous for its fantastic puppet of the horse, controlled by actors on stage. This is one horse that has managed to get into every medium possible.
